For a few years now there have been 2 leading manufactures on the slot car market that have dominated with a winning formula of quality, high detail and finish, great engineering, blistering on-track performance and let's not forget, slots that capture our imagination.  These 2 manufactures are of course Slot.it and NSR.  Well the world is a dynamic place and things change, it turns out their is now a third leading manufacture, enter Racer's Sideways slot range.

2009 and Racer slot cars decides to diversify and produce a cost competitive plastic bodied slot car as an alternative to Slot.it, in fact their first range of 'Daytona Prototypes' use Slot.it running gear.  The 'Daytona Prototypes' are well engineered, highly detailed and well finished slot cars but fail to capture mass appeal world wide.  I have one and its a great track car (the second fastest slot to ever grace ManicSlot track) but despite this I only have one, to be honest the DP cars are a little on the ugly side and that's a problem.


Well Sideways have wised up to that limitation and have moved to a Motorsport era with mass appeal, FIA's Group 5.  Hot on the success of their Ford Capri and the Lancia Beta releases, Sideways have recently released the Porsche 935/78.  The 935/78 has been previously released by Carrera but not to this level, the Sideways offering is a stunning slot car in every respect.  This is the Martini chrome limited edition of the 935/78 and only 1008 of them will be produced.  Detail level remind me of Racer's insane attention to detail, just look at the detail on the 935's bonnet.

I'm typically not one for chrome slot cars but for some reason this one really works and I didn't hesitate when given the opportunity to add one to the collection.  In the slot car aesthetics department it doesn't get any better in my opinion, well done Sideways.  
    

From Wikipedia: 'For 1978, a third and final version of the 935 was developed, the 935/78, intended only for Le Mans. At this stage, the company leaders had decided to neglect the 15-year-old 911, Porsche had introduced the water-cooled front engine Porsche 928 and Porsche 924 models, similar to Volkswagen, which had replaced the Beetle with the Golf.

Due to the head gasket failures of the 1977 biturbo, Porsche parted with their air cooling tradition and introduced water-cooled cylinder heads in the 1978 engine, and equipped them with four valves, too. The capacity was enlarged to 3.2 L, increasing its output to typically 750 hp. The weight, which was less important on the Le Mans straights, had to be 1030 kg now.

As this track was run clockwise, the driver seat was moved over to the right side for better weight distribution and sight in right-hand corners, like Dunlop, Tertre Rouge and Mulsanne, another distinctive feature of the 1978 model.

The new car again took full advantage of a new loophole in the Group 5 rules, introduced for BMW, allowing to cut the floor to accommodate the exhaust of the front engine. As this rule applied also for the rear engine Porsche, the whole floor pan of the 911 was cut away, and the body was lowered by 10 cm (3.9 in).

The gearbox was mounted upside down to reduce the angle of the drive shafts. As the rules did not limit the forward extension of the rear aerodynamic devices, Porsche even added fairings to the doors, bridging the gap between the front and rear fenders. These were shortened later, covering only the front third of the doors.

Because of its white color and long tail shape optimised for low drag, the 935/78 was often nicknamed Moby-Dick.'

NEWS: Carrera 4th quater releases


Carrera 4th quater releases
Aston Vantage, BMW and Mercedes-Benz DTMs

Carrera America have just released some impressive photos of some of their upcoming 4th quarter releases.  All 3 cars are impressive but the BMW DTM and Aston Vantage are the most impressive for sure, the mag design on the BMW is eye catching.  Detail levels look great and given the relative low cost of Carrera slot cars, they represent great value and run very well (mag or non-mag).  

My only complaint about Carrera slots is the large diameter rear wheels they insist on using on pretty much all of their releases.  Given how much attention to detail goes into the rest of their models regarding scale, this always seems a weird choice to me.  A small thing when you look at the front end detail on the BMW and Mercedes.  If you don't have a Carrera racing pair I recommend them as great value for your slot dollar.

As you would expect from a Scalextric product, this slot has a high degree of detail and performs very well on the track.  For my money Scalextric produce the best modern F1 cars on the market.  For those of you that watch with amazement as the 2009 F1 season unfold, a Braun GP car is a must have for your slot car collection.

If you don't follow F1 you're probably wondering why the livery is so plain?  Would you believe me if I told you Braun couldn't get decent sponsorship?  As we know now they went on to win the Constructors and Driver's championship for 2009!


From Wikipedia: 'Brawn GP Formula One Team, the trading name of Brawn GP Limited, was a Formula One motor racing team and constructor, created by a management buyout of Honda Racing F1 Team.

It only competed in the 2009 Formula One World Championship, with drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.  The team clinched that year's constructors' championship, and Button took the drivers' title.  For 2010, the team again changed identity, becoming Mercedes GP.

On its racing debut, the season-opening 2009 Australian Grand Prix, the team took pole position and 2nd place in qualifying and went on to finish first and second in the race. Button won six of the first seven races of the season and on 18 October at the Brazilian Grand Prix, he secured the 2009 Drivers' Championship and the team won the Constructors' Championship.

Barrichello won twice and finished third in the Drivers' Championship. The team won eight of the season's seventeen races, and by winning both titles in its only year of competition became the first to achieve a 100% championship success rate.

On 16 November 2009 it was confirmed that the team's engine supplier, Mercedes-Benz, in partnership with Aabar Investments had purchased a 75.1% stake in Brawn GP (Mercedes: 45.1%; Aabar: 30%), which was renamed Mercedes GP for the 2010 season.'

"Calberson", Giraglia Ronde Rally 1977

TeamSlot have posted some impressive photos of their soon to be released 1977 'Giraglia Ronde' Rally livery of the popular Alpine A310.  Detail on this slot is a little on the fragile side (particularly the front lights and rear wing) so not really that compatible with hard slot racing but absolutely stunning in appearance.  The red, yellow and black livery is very eye catching and just look at those front lights, stunning work Teamslot! 
 
This from Teamslot: 'Finally, the new decoration of the Alpine A310 "Calberson" will come out later this month. The rally version is chosen Giraglia Ronde of 1977. The new model will bring new wheels with plastic hubcaps.'

From Scalextric: 'United Autosports is an American owned, British‐based sports car racing team founded by drivers and entrepreneurs, American Zak Brown and Briton Richard Dean. The team fields two McLaren MP4‐12C GT3 sports cars and an Audi R8 Ultra sports car in the British GT Championship.

In the 2012 season, United Autosports became among the first customers for the McLaren MP4‐12C GT3 car and ran two examples in the Blancpain Endurance Series for drivers Zak Brown, Mark Blundell, Mark Patterson, Alvaro Parente, Matt Bell and David Brabham. 

They also replaced their single Audi R8 LMS with an MP4‐12C GT3 for the final few rounds of the 2012 British GT season and the new car won on its debut at Snetterton in the hands of Matt Bell and Charles Bateman. Further British GT Championship wins followed at Silverstone for Matt Bell and Charles Bateman, and at Donington for Zak Brown and Alvaro Parente.'

NEWS: Slot Classic MGB GT

Slot Classic have just sent us some details on their latest release, the MGB GT raced in the Targa Florio in 1968.  I sure you will agree with me when I say SC has done an impressive job with this release, just look at those wheels, exhaust, front grill, spare wheel and rear tail lights - some beautiful work.  I can't say I've seen one of these on the track but if it handles half as well as it looks then it's bound to be a cracker. 
 
This from Slot Classic: 'We are glad to present you the next Slot Classic model, the MGB from the Targa Florio '68, with starting number #130, registration plate LBL591E, british racing green and minilite tyres. It is our reference CJ-42, and it's the first one that we dedicate to a competition MGB, being the one and only GT and 4 cylinder unit that was ever produced by the factory from Abingdon.
