On the 3rd of January 2009, 194 cars, 235 motorbikes, 30 quads and 84 trucks will start their engines and head off on the last true motorsport adventure known as the Dakar Rally. To save you doing the math, that's the best part of 500 vehicles entering in the 30th (or is it the 31st?) annual running of the Dakar.
The event has been moved from Africa to South America and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to understand why. If you remember, last years Dakar was cancelled due to regional instability,

The Dakar 2009 is off to discover a new continent, South America that offers unlimited possibilities to amateurs of wide open spaces. The round trip to Buenos Aires, via Valparaiso is a challenge in which the most enduring competitors will find their way and have the opportunity to distinguish themselves. With close to 6,000 kilometres of specials and difficulties scattered on the whole course, the battle for the title will remain wide open until the finish."
